Wage Theft in America - A Presentation by Author Kim Bobo

The Justice For All Speakers Forum and the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation are presenting a discussion with Kim Bobo on Sunday, October 11th. Bobo, of Interfaith Worker Justice, will be presenting on Wage Theft in America. Wage Theft in America isn’t just the title of her recent book, but also a growing problem throughout the country. Millions of workers are being cheated while employers continue to take advantage and profit off of workers in almost every industry. Bobo has outlined what we can do to prevent these injustices and will be in Poughkeepsie to discuss it with us.

Rockland County Working Families Fundraiser - September 21st

Please save the date for our annual Working Families / Progressive Rockland fundraiser, an afternoon of good music, good food and good drink, to be held Sunday, September 21st from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Nyack Center.

This year we will be honoring 2 couples who have been an integral part of the Working Families Party in Rockland:  Glenn & Dorothy Patterson and Burt & Emily Shachter.

The Pattersons are well known in Rockland progressive circles.  In addition to their support of Working Families, they have also been involved with other worthy causes:  Glenn as a board member of the Coalition for Freedom & Democracy and Dorothy with the Mental Health Association, to name just two.

The Shachters have been life-long political and social justice activists.  Following World War II, Burt, as a member of the American Veterans Committee, took part in the occupation of the NY State Legislative Building in Albany by returning GIs who were demanding action on affordable housing for veterans.  Emily was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Rockland Mental Health Center, where she served as director of Children’s and Adolescent’s Services.  Both were active in the American Labor Party, New York’s first labor and community based political party.

Both couples are founding members of the Rockland Chapter of the Working Families Party. Burt & Glenn are members of our steering committee.

You have all seen them at the vigil at the corner of Route 59 and Middletown Road.  You have seen them at Living Wage rallies.  You have seen them wherever people gather to speak for social and economic justice.

Please join us as we honor them.

Dick Voigt and his Big Apple Jazz Band will be providing music.  Dick is also well known in Rockland progressive circles.  The former chairman of the Liberal Party, he
has been active in just about every important social justice issue in the county,

Catering will be by Nyack Gourmet.

The suggested contribution is $65 per person / $ 100 for 2

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to campaign for progressive candidates and causes here in Rockland County

Rockland County Public Meeting on Property Tax Circuit Breaker

Special County Legislative Session regarding
the proposed circ uit breaker for property and school taxes.

Known in Working Families circles as the Don Shaffer / Pat Welsh plan, this would cap property and school taxes at a sliding percentage of adjusted gross income:  the less you earn the lower the amount you would be required to pay in property & school taxes.

The Working Families plan (which differs from some of the proposed legislation in Albany) calls for a repeal of a modest portion of the Pataki / Bush era tax breaks for the wealthiest of New Yorkers, those earning over half a million dollars a year.

Hosted by State Senator Thomas Morahan, and Assemblymembers Kenneth Zebrowski Jr and Ellen Jaffe.

The keynote speaker will be Frank Mauro, executive director of the Fiscal Policy Institute. The FPI estimates that many New York residents are spending 25 percent or more of their income on property taxes.

Nyack Impeachment Resolution

Anti-war activists are petitioning the Mayor & Trustees of Nyack, NY to join with other municpalities around the nation and pass a resolution calling for the impeachment of President George Bush.

The vote on such a resolution may take place at the next Nyack Village Board meeting, Thursday, April 12th at 7:30 PM.  Activists are asking that friends and allies join them at the meeting to show support for the resolution

ROCKLAND COALITION FOR FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY MEETING

On Thursday, April 12th at 7:30 PM the Rockland Coalition for Freedom & Democracy is having a meeting at the Unitarian Society in Pomona, with guest speaker Marjorie Smith who is representing 3 detainees at Guantanamo.  The Unitarian Society is co-sponsoring this meeting.

ROCKLAND WFP TO FIGHT MONSEY WALMART

At their December meeting, members of the Rockland County chapter of the Working Families Party agreed that they would oppose the building of a Walmart “Supercenter” on the site of the derelict drive-in movie theatre on Route 59 in Monsey.

Chapter members further agreed that it was not enough to just say no to Walmart:  that they should campaign in favor of a superior use for the land.  Some of the possible uses proffered were:  workforce housing with set asides for workers providing critical services such as health and child care workers, volunteer ambulance and fire personnel, or a “high road” big box store like Costco.

A small committee was tasked with developing ideas for alternate uses of the land.  An initial meeting has been scheduled for the 25th of January.  If you’d like to take part please call Tom at 504-220-3766.
