CONSERVATIVE RABBIS CALL FOR LIVING WAGE FOR EMPLOYEES

The Conservative movement’s policy body on Jewish law has passed a legal opinion arguing that Jewish employers should pay their workers a living wage and strive to hire union workers.

The opinion, written by Jill Jacobs, a rabbi in residence at Jewish Funds for Justice, was passed by the Rabbinical Assembly’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards with 13 votes, easily surpassing the six votes necessary to gain legal standing. A previous version of the opinion had been rejected in 2006. With the vote, the opinion gains stature as a valid legal opinion, though it is not considered binding.

Labor rights have become a signature issue for the Conservative movement as part of its Hekhsher Tzedek initiative, which would certify kosher products that meet acceptable standards for labor conditions and environmental impact. Jacobs, a former labor activist who has been involved with Hekhsher Tzedek, has pushed for the Conservative movement to take stronger stands on social justice issues.

Jacobs’s legal opinion on the obligations of Jewish employers had sparked debate in the law committee, as some members had argued that its provisions would place an undue burden on Jewish employers and might even cost workers their jobs. Committee chair Rabbi Elliot Dorff told the Forward that the final opinion ultimately gained support because its recommendations were not too stringent and because it also covered a host of other important workers’ rights issues, such as prompt payment for workers.

Rockland County Democratic Activist Refuses to Carry Petitions for Congressman Eliot Engel

I will not be carrying a petition for Congressman Eliot Engel this week.

My action—or my lack of action—is my steadfast objection to Congressman Engel’s unwavering support for Reverend John Hagee and his cult-like group, Christians United for Israel (CUFI).

This may come as a shock to many of the recipients of this e-mail. This may also be viewed as an act of party disloyalty by some of you. But I maintain that my refusal to carry these petitions is a righteous protest, in the true spirit of the Democratic Party. I am justly protesting against Congressman Engel and demonstrating that he has harmed the very morals and principals that guide this party and define us as Democrats.

On Tuesday July 22, Congressman Engel will be attending and speaking at the Christians United for Israel’s Washington-Israel Summit, as he has done the previous two years. He will be giving the “Middle East Briefing” along with conservative and anti-choice activist Gary Bauer, noted Republican Party stenographer William Kristol, and warmongering and theocratic Congressman Mike Pence (R-Indiana). At other times during the conference, the dais will be graced by Democratic turncoat and Iraq War supporter, Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), Rev. Hagee himself, former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Has Been), and Clifford D. May, the president of the neo-conservative Foundation of Democratic Democracies and the Chairman of a hyper-neurotic organization known as the Committee on the Present Danger. There are no other Democrats attending this conference.

More than a week ago, Engel's office was contacted by concerned constituents and members of the media who read about his attendance at the conference. Engel's press secretary promised a response last Thursday, but no response came. Congressman Engel is ignoring this issue, hoping that we'll forget about it and let this whole matter slide.

So, why should I (or should you) be so upset by this? First of all, Rev. Hagee is the same clergy member that has said, at various times, that Hitler was “doing God’s will” by hunting the Jews and sending them back to Israel, that “gay sin” was the cause of Hurricane Katrina, and that the Roman Catholic Church is “The Great Whore” and the mother of prostitutes that was revealed in the book of Revelation. Recently, an audiotape of one of Hagee’s sermons revealed blatant disgust for the Jews that he claims to love. Hagee claimed that the current “the Antichrist” is half-Jewish—as he claims Hitler was—and a homosexual as well. This statement, above all, is obvious hate language that reveals a disgust for non-Christians and the gay community. I find his words to be disgusting; I would never associate with anyone that would say such things about his fellow man.

Now, what about Christians United for Israel? As revealed by Max Blumenthal, in a revealing video last year (which you can access from The Huffington Post, YouTube and from some of the links I provided below), CUFI is a group that uniformly lobbies the government to attack Iran because it plays to the group's eschaton beliefs. Yes, CUFI is nothing more but a fatalistic Doomsday cult that believes that there must be a theoretical State of Israel as one of the conditions for the “War of Armageddon” and for like-minded Christians to experience “The Rapture.” This group cares nothing about Jews or the Israel, they only seek to move their Doomsday clock forward and to put all the pieces in motion for this scenario to play out in a bloody war, which they also predict will kill a third of the humans on Earth.

Members of the group are on the record in Mr. Blumenthal’s video as stating that their support of Israel is based solely upon this Armageddon scenario. Why should we believe otherwise? And now, the group sees Iran as an imminent threat to Israel and a possible and fortunate trigger to their end-of-the-world scenario. They are currently seeking to lobby the United States government to destroy Iran without questioning the validity and morality of such a war.

I find it totally unacceptable that a member of the Democratic Party—and our supposedly progressive Congressman nonetheless—continues to support, acquiesce to, and appease groups like CUFI. Without a doubt, CUFI is a dangerous group of maniacal war-mongering theocrats and dominionists. They do not represent even a negligible percent of Congressman Engel's constituency. So why does Eliot Engel, who we support with our signs, petitions, and donations, continue to support CUFI? That’s one question I would like to see answered by the Congressman.

In the meantime, we have got to convince Congressman Engel to stop his continuing support of the CUFI cult and Rev. John Hagee. This is not just an unfortunate alliance, it is outright treason to our amalgamated beliefs and to our party.

I hope that other Rockland County Committee members and other New York State Democratic Committee members will join me in my simple protest not to carry Congressman Engel’s petitions. I am looking forward to other committee members coming out about this matter publicly. I sincerely believe that we are obligated as Democrats to stand up for the fundamental principles of this party and for the shared vision we see for this country. Our loyalties to individual politicians should only be tempered by how well they adhere to these principles. Therefore, anyone’s choice not to carry Congressman Engel’s ballot is not an act of party disloyalty, but a patriotic act of true believers of democracy, peace, and egalitarianism.

Please join me in this protest and respond to the group with your thoughts about this unfortunate matter.

There are likely many people I've left off the Orangetown committee list, as mine is woefully incomplete. Please forward my message to those that likely missed it. Also, forward this message to members of other Democratic Committees in Congressman Engel's district and to voters that may otherwise—and unwittingly—sign a petition for Congressman Engel this week.

P.S.: I would not make allegations without evidence. So, for more reading (and watching and listening), I suggest that you view the Web pages, audio files, and videos that I list below:

Rockland County Public Meeting on Property Tax Circuit Breaker

Special County Legislative Session regarding
the proposed circ uit breaker for property and school taxes.

Known in Working Families circles as the Don Shaffer / Pat Welsh plan, this would cap property and school taxes at a sliding percentage of adjusted gross income:  the less you earn the lower the amount you would be required to pay in property & school taxes.

The Working Families plan (which differs from some of the proposed legislation in Albany) calls for a repeal of a modest portion of the Pataki / Bush era tax breaks for the wealthiest of New Yorkers, those earning over half a million dollars a year.

Hosted by State Senator Thomas Morahan, and Assemblymembers Kenneth Zebrowski Jr and Ellen Jaffe.

The keynote speaker will be Frank Mauro, executive director of the Fiscal Policy Institute. The FPI estimates that many New York residents are spending 25 percent or more of their income on property taxes.

Dominican Sisters of Charity on Suffern 287g Policy

May 7, 2008                                                Good Samaritan Hospital

Mayor John B. Keegan
Village of Suffern
61 Washington Ave.
Suffern, NY 10901

Your Honor:

As you know, Good Samaritan Hospital came to birth in the Village of Suffern on Orange Avenue in 1902. Ida Barry Ryan observed a man bleeding to death while waiting for a train to take him to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, NJ. She spoke on behalf of the needs of the people of the Village when she approached the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth and asked them to open a hospital to serve the sick and dying.

The Hospital is aptly named “Good Samaritan” based on the story Jesus tells as recorded in the Christian Scriptures about a man who was half-Jew and half-Gentile who reached out to care for another. This Samaritan today would be considered undocumented, illegal, a person without a country, since he belonged neither to the Jews nor to the Gentiles of his day.

It is on their behalf that I write to you to ask that you please reconsider your support of 287g. As a health care provider, Good Samaritan Hospital is privileged to serve all those who come to us, or are brought to us, in need, regardless of their financial, religious, social or immigration status.

We have already seen a decline in the area of those willing to come forward to ask that their children be medically cared for under the federally mandated Child Health Plus Program. Our deep concern is that people who need health care will not seek it due to the fear of being “caught” and faced with deportation.

The Mission of the Sisters of Charity and the Sisters of Bon Secours, and therefore of Good Samaritan Hospital is to be Good Help To Those In Need. Our relationship with the Mayor and the Police Chief of the Village of Suffern has always been one of mutual respect and support for the benefit of all those who reside in our community. I implore you to please withdraw your support for 287g on the grounds that it may lead to greater fear and potential intimidation in our community that has always been known as a community of welcome and growth.

We are proud to have our roots deep in the soil of the Suffern Community and look forward to many decades of mutual respect and care-giving for the most vulnerable among us.

I would look forward to an opportunity to meet with you at your convenience to further discuss this difficult but incredibly important issue.

Sincerely,

Sister Fran Gorsuch, CBS
Vice President, Mission
Good Samaritan Hospital

Former Rockland Legislator David Fried Also Benefited from Brie’s Swindled Millions

David Fried, former Democratic County Legislator from LD 13 in Spring Valley, was also a recipient of funds from Gregg F. Brie, who several days ago confessed to bilking millions of dollars from local residents.

On November 4th, 2006, I Don’t Know Inc, Mr. Brie’s business, cut a check for $1,000 to Fried’s political committee.  This donation went into his County Legislature re-election account.

In 2006 Fried ran against Ellen Jaffee in a Democratic primary for the 94th NY State Assembly District seat vacated by Ryan Karben who stepped down after allegations of improprieties towards staffers.

On August 7th of 2006 I Don’t Know, Inc gave Fried a donation of $5,000.

Finally, on September 6, 2006 Mr. Brie wrote a $ 3,400 personal check to Fried’s campaign.

The sum of all these contributions was $ 9,400.

David Fried was elected to the county legislature in 1993.   It was a controversial election, in that Fried moved into a minority majority district to run, some said to take advantage of a 4 way primary among Haitian American candidates.  Fried narrowly lost the Democratic primary, but eked out a close victory on the Independence Party line in the general election after  the Democratic candidate made inflammatory comments about the orthodox Jews moving into the district.  Fried’s victory came largely from those election districts encompassing the Orthodox community.

In 1997 he declined to run for re-election.  During the subsequent campaign some people speculated that a deal had been made:  that Fried would step down from the legislature clearing the way for Democrat Jacques Michel, a Haitian deputy sheriff, to win the seat.  In turn, Michel would help Sheriff James Kralik, a Republican, in the sheriff’s tough election campaign against Democrat Tim O’Neill.  Finally, as the story went, Fried would be appointed to a staff position in the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department.  The sheriff, Fried and Michel all denied that any such arrangement had been made.

Jacques Michel was subsequently elected to the County Legislature.

On January 30th, David Fried was appointed to his position in the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department.

Confessed Swindler Was Major Contributor to Rockland County Legislator Edwin Day’s Re-election Campaign

Gregg F. Brie, who yesterday pled guilty to cheating a  number of people of  2.1 million dollars, was also a major contributor to Rockland County Legislator Edwin Day’s recent re-election campaign.

Mr. Brie’s corporation, I Don’t Know, Inc.  gave $250 to Friends of Ed Day on July 16, 1996 and another $ 1,000 on May 20, 2007.  Additionally, Sheryl Brie donated $250 on April 6, 2006.  The total $1,500 from the Brie family and their business makes them the largest contributor to Day's re-election effort.

He also contributed to David Fried’s failed assembly campaign in 2006.

It appears that the aggregate contributions that I Don’t Know Inc made in 2006 violated the $5,000 annual limit on contributions that a corporation may make to political campaigns.

Edwin Day is a Republican Legislator from New City.  A former NYC police department officer, he defeated Kenneth Zebrowski Jr in 2005 to claim the seat formerly held by the late Kenneth Zebrowski Sr.

White Plains Affordable Housing Victory

By Patrick Welsh -  Westchester WFP Chair

After many years of lobbying and negotiating by the Westchester-Putnam Working Families Party and allies, on March 3, 2008, the White Plains Common Council unanimously amended the White Plains Affordable Housing Program to extend its reach. While the legislation represents a compromise between opposing interest groups, it is a significant victory for workforce housing, and the Working Families Party's role was noted by several Council members in their remarks.

The amended law now requires that developers set aside 10% of units in buildings of ten units or more (up from 6% and down from buildings of 50 units) in all multi-family districts in White Plains, though it does set building size at 30 units in several Census Tract Block Groups, an exception opposed by WFP. The previous law applied only in the downtown district. The affordable units will be made available to families earning between 60% and 120% of area median income.

The Council also tightened rules which have allowed developers to "buy out" of building affordable housing by making payments to an Affordable Housing Assistance Fund. Henceforth, developers will not be allowed to buy out unless they receive permission of the Common Council, and payments will be from $75,000 for a studio to $240,000 for a three bedroom unit as opposed to the former fees which ranged from $30,000-$155,000.

Length of affordability was extended to 30 years with a 30 year renewal at the discretion of the Common Council, though The Working Families Party had called for 99 years with a 99 year renewal.

Members of the common Council pledged to review the new regulations annually and amend them when necessary, and WFP intends to keep working to increase the set-aside to 15% of units, to lower the income levels, to require set-asides in buildings of ten units or more throughout the city, and to extend the terms of affordability to 99 years with a 99 year renewal. In addition WFP has called on the Common Council to provide a "fast track" approval process as an incentive to those developers who set aside 20% or more of units as affordable.

A Sad Anniversary Approaches - Vanderhoef 's Living Wage Veto

Vandergrinch

A few days from now will mark the third anniversary of Rockland County Executive's Scott Vanderhoef's cruel veto of the Rockland  Living Wage Ordinance, a law that would have provided decent, family sustaining wages for hundreds of hard working Rockland County residents who provide direct personal care to the most vulnerable members of our community;  seniors, the developmentally   disabled, and children.

Thanks to our feckless County Executive hundreds of families will  remain in poverty this holiday season.

Rockland County Commuters - Stop the MTA Fare Hikes

Have you heard about the MTA's proposed fare and toll hikes?

The MTA Board is set to approve -- on December 19th -- a set of unnecessary fare and toll hikes. They are rushing to do this, even though the system is expecting a $300 million budget surplus next year.

Working families need a transit system they can afford. The subways, buses and commuter rail lines are the lifeblood of our City and region. The proposed hikes come as working-class, middle-class and poor New Yorkers are facing a rising cost of living and the threat of a recession.

Governor Spitzer and   Mayor Bloomberg control the MTA -- and they have the time and the power to stop the hikes. The Working Families Party   and NYPIRG's Straphangers Campaign have launched a campaign to get them to do just that.

The first step -- Sign your name to our online petition today. Fill out our Subway and Bus line survey.

www.HaltTheHike.org

And send it on to anyone you know who takes public transit.

The MTA needs money, for sure. Pataki and Guiliani starved it for years. Fortunately, the State Legislature has recognized this and has offered to work with the Governor and Mayor to save the current fares. But the MTA seems to want to rush ahead and raise the fares BEFORE the Legislature even comes back into session.

Literally scores of state legislators have called on the MTA to delay any increases until they can look for additional funds for the MTA during the state's budget process next year.

That's just common sense. The Working Families Party and NYPIRG's Straphangers Campaign agree the MTA needs additional funding to keep our mass transit system strong. But that funding should be a shared burden among all who benefit from the country's largest mass transit system - not just the riders.

While Governor Spitzer and the MTA have announced that they would hold the base fare at $2, the MTA still proposes fare increases for the 86% of subway and bus trips using discount or unlimited MetroCards. LIRR fares, Metro-North fares, and bridge and tunnel tolls are also slated to go up.

Enough! Please Sign the Petition. Tell your friends and co-workers. Make sure that The City That Never Sleeps doesn't become The City That No One Can Afford.
